My Journey to Metaphysics
Lily Chung
I Ching and metaphysics is the root of Chinese culture. Practically all Chinese have some knowledge about it even though many regard it as superstition.
Three events had led me to metaphysics
1) My mother consulted a fortune teller on my destiny as I was a sick child (a weak metal undergoing a luck cycle of big fire) and changed my name to a ‘water character’. Things started to improve in my life.
2) In my first year of teaching high school geography in Hong Kong, my sister took me to a fortune teller for curiosity. The first remark from the blind practitioner:’ You are going oversea soon! Someone will hold your hand to the destination. Enjoy 10 years of great luck to fulfill a dream!’ Something I had never dreamed of. Silly indeed!
Amazingly, a few months later on the last day of class before summer vacation, a male colleague suddenly dropped by my desk with a stack of US college bulletin, saying: ’I am going to study in the US next month; it will be your turn next year. These colleges love foreign students and offer generous support.’ I immediately got the message and decided to set my terms on Luck. I applied to the 20 colleges in the magic stack only, specifically stated that I need financial support of at least $2400 a year as a teaching assistant. (I need to support my younger siblings in HK with $100 a month). In 1965: student room rent $1 us a day, tuition, $300 a year.
Two U. responded, one agreed the said amount, the other, $1800. I ended up getting the $2400 and set on journey in 1965. I worked in the summer to earn some extra cash. I did smoothly completed my degrees on target schedule and taught in college in time. This was my first exposure to the magic of Bazi.
3) In 1986 while I lived in San Francisco, I had many issues in my marriage with in-laws for a long period, besides losing my job. I wanted to know whether the rest of life worth the effort to live. With my experience on how Bazi worked, I yearned for the Bazi master to rescue me again. Hiring a teacher was absolutely out of my means in every term. Bazi workshops were unknown then. In despair, I picked up the study on my own, getting the books, the perpetual lunar calendars, and many more books.
In three month, full time (I was unemployed then), I understood and verified from my life events that water and metal are my good elements. I did some creative feng shui by surrounding myself with lots of beautiful pictures of ocean, river waterfalls from magazines and clothes in water colors and pathern design. My desk is facing a big lake in wall paper in my study.
Coincidence? I soon found a job in Wells Fargo Bank (A bank named Deep Wells, A WELL GOING FAR). It started magic in my life. I did free charts for all my colleagues in the office and quietly watched how they responded to the cosmic flows daily and took good notes. That was what exactly one Chinese high official and scholar did in the palace office of Han Dynasty 2000 years ago while he tried to understand how the 5-elements impact humans. Bazi was not invented then. He did the ground work for Bazi.
How I published my first book
In the fall of 1988, I was convinced the 4-pillars was truly functional and it would help the needy falling temporarily into a trap; I started writing the book(the Path to Good Fortune). It was a difficult process and the most challenging job is to convert the Chinese perpetual calendars into English. AlI Bazi students need to use the calendars to check on the flows frequently/periodically. No one can be proficient in reading Bazi without being very familiar with the cycle of the cosmic flows and how they work and impact us.
I had no idea how to start. I need very special help. In despair, I picked a Rat day going to the bank library with a compass during my lunch hour as the Rat is my Scholar star, making me smart and doing scholarly work. Fortunately, I am an Ox, naturally pairing up to the Rat; I figured bending the top of my head (the brain location) to the North, Rat direction, should put me(the Ox) rightly interacting with the Rat energy. With the compass, I did and the magic started. The solution: Using 22 letter alphabets to replace the 22 Chinese characters of 10 stems and 12 branches in the lunar calendars. I use F for yang fire, f for yin fire, E for yang earth and e for yin earth, etc. Thus, both the English and Chinese calendars have the same page size and format. I was ready to publish Path to Good Fortune. If you are interested, you may check on the Truth of Ups and Downs.
The hardest part was finding a publisher. I failed in numerous trials. Finally, I resorted to metaphysics for help again. I have always considered the colleague who guided me to the US, my magician mentor. I began a search to check on every one among the 70-80 people working on the same floor in the bank office to locate my mentor, someone looking close to the special unique ‘Colleague’. Making a story short, this someone I found, sent his subordinate to help me. He wrote me a magic word, ‘Llewellyn’ which published my first book in metaphysics.
To have my first Chinese book published by a traditional publisher (For Chinese publication, traditional publisher is the only way to go), I had also gone through a difficult long route to locate a mentor. Three of my four Chinese publications were translated into English by Jin.
My background
I was from a family of seven siblings, 5 girls and 2 boys. My father was a civil engineer from a technical school, my mother a home maker with high school education. He always worked as a foreman in construction sites and died at 52, leaving the younger siblings to the care of the older girls. We were not exactly poor except during the Sino-Japan War and some years after the war. However, with 7 children, we always lived in tight budget, no extras. My father, being spoiled as the only child, was foolishly and helplessly generous to some poor friends and to himself as well.
As the second oldest girl, born with a great sense of responsibility, I was always loaded with endless chore helping the family and the younger siblings. In order to squeeze some time for play, I have learned to talk and move fast and turned out to be a very serious person, very serious student, time conscious. I love functional knowledge, always passionate about the truth.
I am married and have no birth children by choice. By marriage I have inherited one son and one daughter. My husband is a economist and worked as accountant, long retired, not supporting or opposing metaphysics. I am totally free on my own pursuit. The whole clan is all in the Bay Area of California.
I have never had any teacher on metaphysics. When someone could be smart enough to invent a metaphysical system, why couldn’t someone else work hard enough to learn it on her own? I studied the classics of all the great masters /inventors and experimented with numerous and endless examples. I got the high level training to study right, to question and experiment, while a lot of so –called masters don’t even know what truth is or how to pursue the truth. Some masters could do more harm than good. How to pick the jewel from the stones? I don’t know. A younger sister of mine spent tens of thousands taking lessons from various masters; she never became a practitioner or writing any book. One of my brothers gave his salary to greedy and silly masters for years; he could not read charts.
I was born and trained to be self-reliant since I was five years old. During the war when my parents worked in the farm, I cooked rice (and food in one pot) by burning grass (no rice cooker) , for lunch for my parents to come home from the farm. I did it sound and clean for a few years as a child, no accidents whatsoever. I also kept some old newspapers asking some male adults to teach me one or two words when I had a chance.
My parents couldn’t get me (most of us indeed) to study in English school. I graduated from a Chinese high school and a Chinese University, but I taught in a reputable English high school and did a good job. I just self-studied extra English to survive in a demanding society.
I have had a few careers, in that order, high school teacher, teaching assistant in college, college lecturer, financial analyst in a bank, and since 1996 , retiring from the bank, full time feng shui tutor, writer and lecturer. My classes have been mostly in California, Canada and Hong Kong, with some n Europe and cruise lines; it is the career I created, and the job I enjoy most. Whatever I do, I am always passionate about the truth of life.
Current project
Currently, I am writing, perhaps, my last book, on comparing the destiny of celebrities born on same year, month and day, i.e. with the same three pillars. It started two years ago. It has a special chapter on the top 20 Russian billionaires. 18 of them have 1-4 other celebrities on the same day, they share the ups and downs energy cycle but going on different destiny. This book should be my tribute to my Bazi students.
